Volunteer

Kittitas Valley Fire & Rescue (KVFR) is a combination department, which means that we have both career full-time firefighters and volunteer firefighters. Volunteers serve an important role in the response model for our community. Responding to emergency calls alongside career members.

Volunteer Programs:

Community Volunteers: These volunteer firefighters are assigned to one of the Volunteer Companies within KVFR response area. They respond when their station tones are activated or to any incident they are needed in an all-hazards role (fire, EMS, Hazmat, Wildland, Rescue). Community Volunteer’s will be assigned to any of the following volunteer companies based on response logistics: Badger Pocket (Station 24), Broadview (Station 22), Chief Company Volunteer/Station 29 Volunteer (Station 29), Denmark (Station 23), Fairview (Station 26), Reecer Creek (Station 27), Westside (Station 28), Headquarters (Station 29).

EMS Only Volunteers: A subset of volunteers whose primary interest is emergency medical services. These members are encouraged to respond to all types of emergencies and must maintain EMS certification in good standing.

Single Role Volunteers: A subset of volunteers whose primary interest/skillset is in a response area that benefits KVFR. This could be wildland fire fighting, tender operator, heavy equipment operations, etc… These members will be selected on a case-by-case basis based on the needs of KVFR.

How to Apply: Any person who wishes to become a volunteer KVFR must complete a volunteer application and submit it to the HR Manager at mcbridesy@kvfr.org. Applications are open August- October. All applicants who apply will be invited to our volunteer information night, which is held in October.  The information night will include a discussion about the different volunteer programs and the KVFR volunteer recruit academy. We have limited spots in our volunteer recruit academy.  Applicants will be required to sign up for a volunteer interview.  Selected volunteer candidates will be subject to a background investigation and driving record check.

Volunteer Recruit Academy: All KVFR volunteers must complete the recruit academy, which is the initial firefighter safety training. The academy runs from November to April each year. With classroom-based training two nights a week, and then hands-on training on multiple Saturdays. EMS only and single role volunteers will need to attend the annual recruit academy or other designated training for skills identified by Training Captain. The academy will include opportunities to test for IFSAC FF1, Hazmat Awareness and Hazmat Operations. Under certain circumstances a volunteer may be brought on mid-year based on the applicant’s skill level and need to KVFR. If a volunteer is brought on mid-year, they will be expected to attend the next recruit academy for any classes and skills identified by the Training Captain
