The law requires KVFR to make a good faith effort to determine the cause and origin for every fire to which the District responds. KVFR employs two certified fire investigators and the District works closely with other entities such as the Kittitas County Fire Marshal (KCFMO) and the law enforcement agencies in the area. In 2016, there were 18 significant investigations and investigations of interest as shown in Figure 3 below. Staff successfully identified the cause and origin of 100 percent of those fires. Investigators identified arson as the cause of one fire. Staff worked with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute the case to a successful resolution.
